Question
Hi, we have an 8 1/2 yr old male brindle boxer , who has started to dribble urine it seems invontary and he doesn't seem to notice he is doing it. Is there anything we can give him to help him stop of is it just old age?

Answer
Before we discuss treatment, it is imperative that we determine the cause of the urinary incontinence in your dog. Possible causes could be a urinary tract infection, bladder stones, a bladder or urethral tumor, neurologic disease (loss of control of the bladder) and lastly sphincter control incontinence which can be hormonal. (This is more common in females than males.) A thorough work-up, including bloodwork, a urinalysis and xrays would be appropriate. If there is blood in the urine but no obvious stones on the xray, then an ultrasound of the bladder will help rule out a tumor. If these tests are all negative and we are left with the possibility of hormonal incontinence, then a drug called phenylpropanolamine may be helpful. All of these things will require the expertise of a veterinarian and I would encourage you to make an appointment when you are able.
