Question
I have two female pitbulls, they are NEVER agressive, but when one of my females got pregnant by the only male in the house, the two females started attacking each other regularly for some unkown reason to me, the one who is NOT pregnant seems to be the one who is starting the "fights" and yesterday they were in the back yard and began fighting when I was not home and my husband didnt hear them til it was over, one female has two deep wounds in her legs, not large and only broke the skin but u can see a little muscle, and the other females ears are tore up, the skin was broke behind the right ear and the skin was broke in front of the right ear and she has some bite marks on the floppy parts of her ears...I have cleaned them and took aniseptic swabs around the edges of the bad wounds, and put antibiotic ointment on the rest of the scrapes, I bandaged them up for the night, they seem okay, I am giving them 500mg each daily of amoxicillin that i had in the house....My one female is limping some because both her fornt legs have battle wounds, and one looks a bit puffy on the leg that she has the worst wound....I cant get to a vet, what can i do for them....For the larger wounds, that only broke skin, but muscle is showing some.....They have never fought, until now and I dont quite understand why now.....HELP!!

Answer
Two female dogs in heat + one intact male dog= three dogs that have the potential to kill each other. That is why they are fighting. These dogs need to be neutered or this will get worse and worse. The fighting won't stop there either, these dogs will attack other animals if they get in the way when they are in the mode to fight each other.

These wounds will only get worse also because they are ripped apart under the skin where you cannot see it. You see punctures but under that the muscle gets macerated from the teeth moving back and forth and the in and out pressure of the jaws.

They need to have these wounds opened up, cleaned out, dead muscle tissue cut away and a complete course of antibiotics. One 500 mg for each dog is not enough to help- it will only create more resistant bacterias.

So call the vet tomorrow. You cannot care of these kinds of deep wounds at home. When these wounds start to really stink and are oozing you will know that the muscle is rotting out from under the skin. I have seen plenty of these- trust me- you do not want this for your dogs.

While they are out for the wound care have them fixed and it will cost less in the long run. You will save hundreds of dollars from fighting and you will stop unwanted puppies! You win- they win!
