3 year old female chinchilla

Question
Dear Miss Connell,
My chinchilla has been living with me for quite a number of years now (just over 3 years).  Today while observing her in her cage, I noticed a strange discharge coming from her vaginal area.  The discharge was slightly milky and watery.  I have been checking many websites on this topic and found that this is a typical occurrence when the plug is released.  I was hoping that maybe you would be able to tell me that this is a normal thing to occur in female chins, as I am considering taking her to a vet. (Note that she has had no contact with another male).
Yours Truly,
Nicholas S.

Answer
"when the plug is released" would refer to when an animal, or human, is pregnant and the mucous plug is released just before giving birth. Since you stated she has not been with a male that is not possible.

In this case I would think that she has an infection of some sort, possible bladder.
I am not a chin expert but that would be my guess. I think you are wise to take her into the vets.
She may need some antibiotics.
