Labrador is suddenly pacing & licking profusely

Question
Do you have any suggestions as to the cause of my 3 year old yellow Labrador Retrievers odd behavior. He is a 110lb. sweet, calm dog. Today he came in from the yard & kept pacing for hours. He was also licking (not anything in particular) & his heartrate seemed very rapid. I gave him 2 Benadryls, which seemed to help a little. No vomiting- I am quite concerned, as this happened before & then went away. I love this dog & do not want to neglect whatever could be causing this.
Thank You
Sandra

Answer
Has he seen a vet lately? His size alone could be a cause for concern for his heart. He may be experiencing some pain in his chest.
There are so many things that can cause this that it is really imperative that he is seen by a vet and have some blood work done on him.
The average Labrador Retriever is tops out between 65- 85 lbs according to the AKC. A dog that is 110 at 3 yrs old is a huge cause for concern. Just as with people, obesity in dogs can cause some major health issues.

Hypothyroidism, Cushing's disease, diabetes, kidney, liver and heart failure to name a few.

He really needs to see the vet and get to the bottom of this. Also if he isn't on heartworm prevention you should get him tested for that also.

The Benedryl might have calmed him because of its sedative effects but if he isn't having an allergic reaction to something it won't do much.
I am not discounting that he could have as he most certainly could have been stung or bit by something to cause this.

Please get him into a vets as soon as you can. If he suggests a reducing program for him write me back and I can help with that.
Let me know what they find out in his blood work.
