Question
I have a 1 year old sow who has recently given birth to a healthy litter of 4, 3 days ago. Before the birth, she was scratching and itching a lot around her rump area. However, during the labour, she rubbed and scratched her hind rump area so vigourously she removed most of her hair! Since the birth she still constantly itches and scratches and hair is starting to disappear from her other side. She has had a course of Ivermectin shots some six months ago, but I loath to get another one while the young ones are still suckling. Would it be OK to give her a bath in a parasitic shampoo, but rinse the teat area so her young can freely suckle? Any  thoughts most appreciated.

Answer
Hi Dean!  I would not chance using any kind of chemical product on the mother guinea pig while nursing her babies. The chemical in the parasite killing product may have devestating effects on the guinea pig babies.  I would talk to your veterinarian, as he/she may have a remedy that your sow can use, ridding her of the mites, but not effecting her young.  I truly wish I could be of more help.  I work tomorrow night, getting home somewhere around midnight.  I can talk to the veterinarian that I work with to see if he has any suggestions that would be safe for the babies, but effective for the sow.  Hopefully I will find some helpful information for you.  I'll keep you posted and thank you for your patience.
