fleas and distended stomach

Question
i just got a 7 week old rott pup today and i am totally in love with her. how ever after taking her home i noticed that she had some fleas on her face and that her stomach was really bloated. i thought it was just because she had ate too much but when i put food out for her she devoured it. she did have a bowl movement which, when i sorted through it (ew), i did not see any worms....and i was VERY thurough. what could be the problem...
I also made a huge mistake....I brought this flea and tick shampoo that said it was for pupppies....however, after reading it AFTER i treated her (yes i no very stupid), it said not for puppies under 12 weeks. so im now scared out of my mind because the main area i had to treat was her face. i was EXTREMELY careful not to get any in her eyes, nose, or mouth, and it did work, but now im scared out of my mind bc i cannot find any info on what will happen since i washed her with it. she isnt acting funny or anything but im still scared witless...will she be ok? should i be monitoring her for anything?

Answer
First of all, the bloat can be from the worms in her intestines. All puppies are born with roundworms, period. She needs to get to the vets and get her shots and be wormed for rounds, whips, hookworms, etc. Once a month heartworm prevention will prevent them after that.

Do not feed her one big meal. Puppies need to be fed three small meals a day-morning noon and night. Get her on a good food like Science Diet Large Breed puppy growth, not some cheap grocery store brand. Science Diet has precision nutrition for this little girl that can help her live a long life.

Since you rinsed her off well after the shampoo, she should be fine. She would be having breathing issues and be listless and drowsy if she was having a reaction to the flea shampoo. Flea shampoos are a waste of money anyway. She will have fleas again as soon as she is dry. Putting her on Sentinel once a month heartworm prevention will also kill off all the fleas in your house by sterilizing them. After about a month you won't have any more fleas as long as she is on the Sentinel- which is year round.

You may see some dead worms in her bowel movement after she is wormed- and you may not. But after ten days she should be wormed again (after the vet does it) and then the monthly pill will keep her clean.

Rotties are very susceptible to parvo so do NOT hesitate in getting her into the vets asap for her first set of vaccinations, her worming medicine and her heartworm/flea prevention.

Good luck and have fun with her!!
