Lyme Disease

Question
I adopted a 3 year old dog that turned out to be sick.  He tested positive for Lyme Disease and also a urinary tract infection.  He received a Lyme shot at the vet, the same day he tested positive.  I realize the shot did not cause the positive test result, but was it safe to vaccinate on an already positive dog?  He is on day 5 of a 30 day treatment of antibiotics that should take care of both the Lyme and his UTI.  He is scheduled to be neutered on the 31st.

Answer
It is safe to vaccinate an infected dog. The vaccine doesn't make the Lyme worse nor does it help either. The school of thought used to be that if you do vaccinate dogs that were potentially infected, that the vaccine could ignite an immune response that could help the dog fight off the disease.

I do hope that he makes a complete recovery.
