Question
My daughter rescued a 4 week old puppy in mexico. the puppy is now 5 weeks eating great but runny nose, clear liquid and having seizures at least once a day. The vet in mx thinks it's distemper, but the pup seems to be stronger each day, is this possible with distemper? She has her on an antibiotic, feeding her well, meat, yogurt, pedialite, cannot get milk replacement...any suggestions? She rescues these animals all the time would be nice to have a expert opinion, Mexican vets have different emotions about animals. Thank you so much Sandy

Answer
Distemper's symptoms are usually green snotty nose and eyes, coughing (somtimes) and other neurlogical signs. The tremors and seizures usually come right after the virus has passed if the dog survives it.

A 5 week old puppy having seizures is not a good thing. It sounds very much like it could have distemper, there are ways to find out, but it could just have some really bad seizure problems from birth. Hydrocephalis, bad hearts, porto-systemic shunts in the liver can all cause these. This dog needs to be evaluated for the seizures if the other symptoms don't match up.

I don't know where you daughter is now,but she should see another vet with this puppy. Also needs to be on a more balanced diet of some sort- one made for dogs. Meat, yogurt and pedialyte are good for a short run but not for raising healthy puppies.

Distemper is pretty rampant is areas like this but rabies is worse and your daughter is exposing herself to this fatal virus by taking in non-vaccinated strays. She should get a rabies prophylaxes vaccination.

I wish her and the puppy well.
