Question
I have a 3 year old Shih Tzu which I acquired from a family that did not have time for her about 8 months ago,  She has some type of allergy-- she scratches all the time and has an odor.  Have been using different allergy shampoos(oatmeal) etc which helps for a day or two-- then the odor is back.  She doesn't seem to be scratching quite as much except after she has been outside on the grass.  I try to wipe her feet off as soon as she comes in but she still chews her feet especially between the toes. Is there some rememdy that you can reccomend that might help this little gal.  Thanks

Answer
If the dog truly has a grass allergy then doing what you are doing will help some, but the fire has already been lit and you need to have something to put the fire out.  YOur vet can give some cortisone to decrease the intense itching and redness that accompanies allergies.  If the dog is smelly, then you may need to use an antibiotic in addition to the shampoos to keep the bacteria on the skin from breaking down the oils on the skin (that's what makes the odors).
