Dogs stomach making loud noises!

Question

Coda
Hello,

I have an (almost) 2 year old chocolate-lab-mix, he's an ideal 50 pounds and is very active and has had no serious health issues (he was positive with lime dissease 8 months ago, responded well to treatment and has had a clear bill of health since then).

This morning, he had one regular poop, then refused to eat his breakfast (2 cups of Canidae which he usually LOVES) and went back outside and had severe diarrhea (water gushing out of him).  This all happened within about 10 minutes.  I had him lay down so I could feel his stomach and press gently to see if it caused him pain.  He didn't whine, or seemed to be bothered at all by my poking/prodding.  While I was rubbing his tummy to calm him down, I heard INTENSELY LOUD stomach gurgling.  This has never happened to him before.  He's had severe diarrha before (not often) when he was younger, but never the gurgling.  He has not passed any gas.

Two hours later, he's still not interested in food, but did drink a little bit of water a couple times (probably only totalling about 1 cup), and is still having the gurgling.  He was whining because he wanted to eat his food (he loves it!) but he didn't eat... I think he was frustrated that he wanted to eat but couldn't.  He doesn't seem to be in any pain, is active and wants to play, but I'm making him rest.

We were at my parents house for the weekend and he likes to "vacuum" their floors looking for neglected pieces of old food and my mother likes to cook him a scrambled egg... so he may have eaten old crumbs and one scrambled egg in the past 24 hours.  Other than this, his diet has not changed at all and he hasn't been put under any extreme stress (other than traveling 2 hours to visit my folks, then 2 hours back).

I attached a picture just so you can get an idea how big he is and what he looks like if that may help.  Any ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!  Also, is there anything I can give him to make him feel a bit better?  Yogurt, tea or antacids?  Thanks!!

Answer
Well he obviously has some stomach distress. He could have eaten something off of the floor-but even scrambled eggs will do that. Dog's don't do well with 'surprises', that is, something out of the ordinary from their daily diets. It throws their bellies into an uproar and usually diarrhea is the result.

This can get as bad a gastritis or pancreatitis, so Mom needs to stop feeding him goodies.

You can try some Pepto Bismol for his stomach-give him a couple of teaspoons full or one tablespoon. Hold off on food for 24 hours but keep his water down. If he vomits you might need to pick up the water and leave just ice cubes in his bowl.

If he is still not back to his old self tomorrow call the vet.
