yeast infection in dogs ears

Question
I have been treating my large husky-lab cross for a chronic yeast infection in his ears for over a year.  It never seems to go away.  I use Otomax from the vet according to the directions and clean them with a veterinarian ear cleaning solution.  Would yogurt help to get control of this problem?  Also, he does have allergies and I find that Benadryl does help him to make sure that he doesn't scratch until he gets a hot spot. Thanks! J

Answer
Hi Jennifer!Over 80% of dogs with yeast infections have chronic allergies.
So by treating the allergies year round you can help decrease the severity of the allergies. Your vet can help with this. Truthfully, antihistamines like benadryl do not do much to combat dog skin allergies.

Otomax is not designed to use for long term. It contains a very potent steroid that is for short term use only. For easts, I recommend an ear cleaner with vinegar and boric acid called Malacetic Otic. It really helps, but it needs to be done once or twice a week and every time the dog gets any water in the ears.
 Hope this helps!Nicole.D.
