Question
My cat is approx. 16 years old, we got her from a vet when her age was guessed to be about 1 year old.  She was diagnosed 11/2 ago with diabetes and has been eating a cat food made especially for diabetes.  This has seemed to work well.  3 days ago she stopped eating and drinking, which being diabetic, she usually drinks a lot.  Yesterday morning, I was able to get her to eat a little canned food but about 20 minutes after eating she threw it up.  I took her to the vet yesterday afternoon.  He is stumped.  He is unsure what is going.  She has lost a few pounds, her blood sugar was a little high but her keystones were not elevated.  He sent us home with a can of tuna (to see if she would eat) and an antibiotic (amoxi) that I give her twice a day.  She has had 2 doses of the antibiotic and there is no change except that she will just smell the food and not even try it.  Her coat seems to have dandruff and has lost its sheen.  She still enjoys being brushed and petted and will even get up from her bed to come be petted.  She is also still not drinking, she will sniff at the water and walk away.  She has not had a bowel movement since last night, nor urinated.

Answer
I would ask your vet to give her a B12 injection as well as some oral Cyproheptadine to see if that stimulates her appetite.  Also, since she is not eating or drinking I would recommend a fluid treatment.

You should try to offer her MEAT baby food as well as cooked chicken to see if that interests her at all.

You did not mention if she is on insulin.  Most diabetic cats need insulin and her not eating may be the fact that her body can no longer compensate with the elevated blood sugars and she needs to start on insulin therapy.  The fact that she lost a few pounds mean that the diabetes is NOT controlled with her current treatment plan.

The other situation is that she is 16 years old and her body may be shutting down.  Diabetes does take a toll on the body and can cause other problems.
