Lymes Diesease

Question
We were just about to breed our Chocolate Lab. We got her hips certified and made arrangements with a stud to breed the dogs. Today the vet called me and said that our dog had lymes diesease. Do you recommend breeding the dogs still? My vet didn't think it was an issue, but I wanted to get another opinion. Could this be passed on to the stud dog or the puppies?

Answer
Hi Bob!  No, this disease can not be passed to other dogs...BUT, Lyme's Disease MUST be treated with a heavy duty antibiotic called Doxycycline...any other antibiotic WILL not do no matter what your veterinarian may say.
These antibiotics can be dangerous to the fetuses...so be sure that she finishes the antibiotic therapy before breeding her.  This is usually a treatment of 28 days, multiple doses per day.
I hope this has helped...and if you have any more questions about Lyme's Disease, please feel free to ask.
Good luck and give your little labby girl some kisses for me!
