Dog coughing

Question
I have a 4 YR old pomerainian and hes always coughing like hes having an attack and after hes done he coughs up this white foamy stuff. He usually does this after coming inside from a walk but sometimes is just a regular thing. Some nights I hear him doing it every 10 minutes.
I heard that it is just something this breed does. Is this true or is something else going on?

Answer
Well first of all I need to know if he is on heartworm prevention. If he is, then he could be coughing because he has a problem with his trachea, or he is having a problem with his heart.
Dogs don't normally cough all the time, unless they have been straining against a leash for a while.
If he isn't on heartworm prevention then you need to get him tested to see if he has those. If he does, discuss getting him treated for them.
Have the vet listen to his heart and his trachea also.
Some small dogs can develop a collapsing trachea which makes them cough but it usually sounds like a honking cough.
His spitting up the foam is the only normal part about him coughing.
He really should see a vet as I stated above.
I hope he is alright. Please let me know what the vet says.
