how to tell how old a dog is?

Buster the dog with ou I have this corgi mix at the shelters and when i got him it said he was a year and a half and its been 5 years since i had him but my thing is that when we first got him he had a gray chine and now his grays have gone everywhere on his elbos paws tummy everywhere he looks so much older then he is how do i know his age photo bellow.

He looks about 8 yrs old to me but I have seen gray on dogs as young as three, so it's hard to say. Roughly guessing he was most likely closer to three when you got him if he was getting gray then. But if he had a white chin, then he was probably two or so.
That's about as close as I can get for you.
