Cat sores.

Question
Hi, my cat who is just over a year old had kittens on may 4th. The kittens are just over 3 weeks old so they are still nursing, but my cat has developed a sore just under the lowest two teets. It looks as though it's just really raw skin from the kittens fighting to get the milk, but it's starting to get a lot worse. It is starting to scan around the outside but is constantly weeping by the middle. It's red and looks really irritated. When my cat tries to feed the kittens she is constantly cryin out in pain from the kittens crawling on it. I hve been soaking it in warm water and trying to keep it as clean as possible, it will start to heal and then just continue to get worse from the kittens crawling.

Answer
You may need to start supplementing the kittens with milk replacer.  I would also advise you to start softening kitten food in water to make it soft and start trying to hand feed them.  The more you feed them, the less they need to nurse.  You may also need to get some ointment with a steroid in it for the teats so that the inflammation will subside.  Talk to your veterinarian about that.
