salivation

Question
This might be something interesting for you to research.  I have a 9 month old South African mastiff.  Someone I know said they heard about an elective surgery that you can have performed to remove some of the salivation glands on breeds that have a tendency to drool quite a bit.  I don't want any surgery that will jeopardize his health.  This is something that I can live with but it's a bit of a problem with him drooling on himself which makes him smell (and too frequent of baths can take away the good oils of their skin...he also has problems with drier skin to begin with).  He also drools quite a bit on my  other dogs and also in the water bowl.  I spoke with my vet about this and she's never heard of elective surgery for this.  She's removed some but only because they were cancerous.  Have you ever heard of this?  Any suggestions?

Answer
As your vet said, I have heard of them being removed if there is something wrong, but not just because he's a drooler. I tried to look into it for you also on the internet and I could not find anything about it being an elective surgery. The thing I would suggest is talking to a few vets about it. I personally would not recommend it even if it is possible. It's not worth putting his health at risk. I would recommend finding a moisturizing shampoo with conditioner in it for him. Maybe your vet can recommend a good shampoo for dry skin. Well sorry I couldn't help you out more. I hope I helped a little at least. Have a good evening.
