Old Dog Urine

Question
Hi.  My husband, my 5 month old son and myseld just recently moved into the apartment below us so we could have a backyard for my son to play in.  He is learning to crawl and I am becoming concerned with the dog urine that is in the carpet.  The tenants of the apartment before we moved in had two dogs that were not quite house broken.  Before moving in the apartment I shampoo'd the carpets twice.  I wasn't able to smell the urine anymore and figured I got it all.  Recently my mother came over and said that she smelled the urine.  Later that week the babysitter came over to my house while I was at work to grab something for my son.  When I picked my son up, she mentioned she smelled the urine and it was overwhelming.  I believe my husband and I are used to it but my concern is that my son is beginning to crawl and is face planting into the carpet, plus putting his hands in his mouth.  It's grossing me out to the point where I am not letting him crawl around except in a small playpen and tryin to get my landlord to replace my carpet because it is not fair to my son.  Could the urine smell plus what urine is left in the carpet and under the carpet be a problem to my son?

Answer
Yes, Tiffany, I would get the carpet and pad removed...if you can afford it.  The urine smell and bacteria will cause your baby to get allergies and even respiratory infections.  I know, I was a nurse 18 years - Pediatrics and I specialized in Respiratory.

So, my answer for the health of your baby and the rest of the family is to get the carpet and pad removed. Have the area all washed down with Bleach before a new floor or pad/carpet is replaced..

Sorry, I wished that I could tell you it would all be ok..
