Pekingese pregnancy

Question
I have a one year old peke girl and a two year old peke boy.  I took precautions in my girls first heat but somehow i think she is pregnant.  Her nipples have swelled to an enormous size and she is gaining significant weight.  I also just switched my dog food and both of my dogs are eating alot more than they used to.  could this weight be coincidental or could my dog really be pregnant?  I've heard of bad situations when a peke becomes pregnant on her first heat.  Is it possible to get an abortion or should i just let nature take its course?

Answer
An abortion is not possible unless you do not want to breed her again, then you can just have her spayed right away.  Otherwise, you will have to let nature take it's course.  You can have an x-ray taken at 6 weeks to determine how many puppies there are or if your veterinarian has ultrasound, the fetuses can be detected earlier.  Pregnancy normally lasts 9 weeks in dogs so you can try to figure out her due date from when she was in heat.  Labor usually proceeds in 24 hours after the body temp drops below 100 degrees.  Make sure she is eating puppy food as small breed dogs tend to have problems with low calcium levels during the last few weeks of pregnancy and the beginning of nursing.
