blood spots in ears under skin

Question
My kitten is 12 weeks old. I have had her for 4-5 weeks now. I found her as a stray and it was love at first sight! This morning i woke up to find blood on my pillow, (which is where she sleeps each night). After looking all over her to find the source of the blood, i found it to be comming from her mouth. At the same time, i noticed blood spots in her ears. The blood is under the skin.

I have already been to the vet and her diagnosis is " this is a mystery!" She wanted me to admit her to the hospital so that they can run tests on her. They did one blood test which came back that her blood count is low. I dont want her staying in the hospital until i can go to another vet and get a second opinion.

She is still acting normal. She continues to eat, use her litter box and be playful. do you know what this could possibly be? Have you ever heard of bleeding under the skin and low blood counts in kittens? There is no chance she ever gotten into any rat poison or mouse bait. That was the vets first question. She was a stray before i got her, but since i have had her (4-5 weeks) she has not been exposed to anything harmful.

Answer
Blood spots under the skin is called petechia. It can be caused by many things. Rat and mouse poison of course is one of them. Anything, such as onions even, can cause it. Blood from her mouth could be from her teething but the petechia in her ears is a cause for alarm.

I have no idea what this is but you need to have her tested for vitamin k deficiencies and maybe for some sort of toxic metals. If nothing else you should have her treated with some vitamin K injections.

If she is eating and doing well you could wait for a second opinion but don't wait too long. You didn't mention if you ever got her tested for leukemia or FIV, FIP or anything else.
Her blood count is low which is why she is anemic, but why it is low is not something I can answer.
Her diet could be an issue also if it isn't providing her with the proper nutrients. Maybe she got into some food that is causing this also.

It is a mystery until they find out why she has this petechial bleeding.
I hope you find an answer soon Laura. It is very scary finding something like this in a kitten. They don't have many reserves either so when they are sick they need attention quickly. That's why I said to not wait to long to take her in to another vet.
Please let me know what you find out. I will pray for her little sweetness to get well soon.
