Question
Our three year old male lab began showing symptoms of a sore rear hip two days ago and did not eat anything substantial yesterday.  He has a hard time jumping up onto anything and just lays around.  Other than the discomfort, he seems to be in good spirts.  What may be the problem and what can we give him for the pain until we can take him to the vet?

Answer
Hi Kelly!  Taking him to your veterinarian as soon as possible would be most beneficial.  It sounds as though his hip may be slightly out of the socket.  The sooner your veterinarian pops it back into place, the better. The longer it's out of the socket, the more those tendons and muscles will stretch, making it more difficult for the joint to stay in the socket.  There are no over the counter medications that a dog can take for pain.  Advil, Tylenol, Asprin, ALL of them are HIGHLY deadly, as they cause irregular hearbeat which leads to cardiac arrest.
I am sure if you tell your veterinarian what's going on, they will be able to get you right in!
I hope this helps and please let me know how he does!
