Horse healing

Question
Hello, I have a horse that one week ago had to get 10 stitches on his pasturn area (ankle on rear leg). He has been on stall rest for a week, and we change the bandages daily. Its not bad but some of the sutures pulled out, I noticed when I took the bandage off. There is no infection and the wound is not pulled apart or deep. I have been putting antibiotic cream on it, is there anything you could suggest to put on it or do to help healing, its looking ok but it could be better.

Answer
I am not an equine expert. My holistic veterinary training has shown there are many different treatments that can help wounds heal and prevent future problems, like proud flesh. I would see what your local holistic pet store/feed store/health food store had on hand. Calendula lotion/gel/tincture(put 10 drops into 1C water)/cream is excellent to help healing.

I would also suggest you join the site - www.HolisticHorseKeeping.com and give many fewer vaccines, no processed feeds (pelleted, sweet, etc) and even try for organic or less chemically treated hay, and alternatives to all the chemical deworming medicines that weaken the system.

I strongly recommend finding an integrative veterinarian with whom to work. This is a person trained in many different approaches, including using conventional drugs only when absolutely needed. Working with one can increase the chance that your horse can live a long (30 to 40 years, maybe) and healthy life after recovering from this inujury. There are good ones and great ones, and a few homeopathic veterinarians will consult by phone or email. Read my comments at the end on working with and selecting a holistic veterinarian.
You can go to the web sites for each type of holistic practice and use their referral list to find one near to you:
1. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine: www.IVAS.org & www.TCVM.com
2. Homeopathic veterinarians (these can often help you by phone if no other holistic practitioners are nearby that you like): www.theAVH.org and www.DrPitcairn.com. To find homeopathic practitioners for yourself, and homeopathic products, go to
