Jelly Fat Cat

Question
A neighbors cat, not well taken care of, comes by to eat, be loved, etc.  I was told he is about 5 yrs. old.  He is a larger neutered male.  I have picked him up recently and noted that his sides feel jelly like in a loose yet textured way; almost as though he has fluids in him a bit.  The cats that I have had who were genuinely fat, never had that consistency.  I am wondering, what may be going on with this cat?
Thank you.

Answer
Without seeing him, I can not say if it is normal or not.  However, some cats do have a very large fat pad under their belly that does jiggle and wiggle when they walk.  Unless there is a wound, there should not be fluid under his skin.  If he has a big pot-belly appearance than that could be due to fluid in his abdomen from worms, FIP or some type of tumor or even heart disease. The options are bring it to the neighbor's attention so they can have him checked out or take him to the vet yourself.
