Question
Hi, my dog has just developed a swelling on the right side of her mouth, her mouth seems to be drooping on that side and her gums are showing. she has just been chewing on a bone so iwondered if it had something to do with that? she doesn't seem to be in any pain but it looks odd?

Answer
Bones cause more damage to a dog's mouth and intestines then any other thing they eat. If it is a rawhide chew bone that is different, but real bones will splinter and can cause death in dogs.

They can also have splinters get up into the gums and cheeks of the dog- sometimes affecting nerve endings.
Your dog could have also developed a palsy where the nerve in the cheek is paralyzed. This causes the one side of the face to droop.

The swelling concerns me the most. Did this develop right after eating the bone?
If the swelling and droopiness are not gone by tomorrow this dog needs to see a vet. Dogs can do so much harm to their mouths that a vet really needs to look up in there and see what is going on.
