Question
hi i have a maine coon kitten nearly 10 weeks old he has had conjuctivites in his eys but with drops it seemed to stop ginking up however after stopping drops it looks squinty and sore again i have been to the vets and he has told me he needs a tempory operation and another when he is older im just looking for answers as several breeders ive spoken to have said its uncommon to have a operation for this so young and be told he will need another later on! im abit mistrusting as my mc stud was sent to a speciatist last year cost me 1600pounds to be told he was stressed and i should get him neutered which i did!  obviously finding him a new home is going to be very difficult as no one is going to want a kitten if he is going to need further surgery later on? im at a lose as what to do otherwise he is very healthy only one in his litter so very big fat and happy but with a squinty eye :-(

Answer
Most kittens with eye problems have a viral disease called Rhinotracheitis, which is a Herpes virus.  This can cause damage to the cornea and that is why some vets will close the eye and allow the ulcers to heal.  There are some antiviral drugs available to help this condition.  I don't know what is available in the UK.  You will need to talk to your vet or to an eye specialist.
