prolapsed anus

Question
Found a litter of kittens and hand raised them...kept the runt which is a female manx. She is about 12 weeks now, very healthy and active except she has what appears to be a prolasped anus. Looks like a stoma  might look. Doesn't seem to be sore and has been that way since I found her. What do you think it is and can I do anything about it??

Answer
This is a common problem with tail-less cats. She isn't a true Manx breed, unless she is a purebred. But lacking the bone at the base of the tail she is also lacking nerves there that control the rectum.

There isn't a lot that can be done. She may be fine, but these cats have a tendency to have numerous bladder infections, bleeding problems around the rectum and lack of stool control.

She definitely needs to be spayed soon. That way she won't pass it on nor give herself uterine infections either.

It's kind of a wait and see thing with a cat like this. IF it is really super prolapsed an experienced vet can do some 'tucking' surgery but there is a risk of incontinence with that as well.

Best to have the vet evaluate her. Hopefully he has already seen her for her vaccinations.
