QuestionI just took my persian cat to the vet because I thought she might have ringworm because of hair loss in spots with brown circular lesions on her skin in a couple of spots. She did a culture and said they would let me know in about 10 days. She also said they would check for chlamydia? She was in a hurry and didn't really have time to answer my questions completely. What do I do to protect myself from either of these things and should I be worried about my grandchildren being around her?
AnswerRingworm can be contagious, but if you start topical treatment, it should not be contagious after 3-4 days. Wash your hands with a good antimicrobial soap and wash combs and brushes used on the cat with a pretty strong bleach/water solution. Launder as much of the bedding that the cat lays on, too. As far as chlamydia, I don't know why they would check for that. Chlamydia is a respiratory, not a skin, infection.
