Question
My dog awakened my son the othernight. She appeared to be running while
lying on her side. He tried to waken her but she wouldn't stop. Being a
mid-size dog she was hurting my son as she was running" hard. She was
frothing at the mouth considerably. My wife tried to wake her so she'd
stop but to no avail. She then pulled her off the bed and the dog was
doing the same thing on the rug. As I knelt over her, her eyes were open
and she was staring straight ahead. She came out of the "running" but then
stood very startled and disoriented. She acted as if she didn't know us
and barked meanly at me. In a way it was if she was coming out of
anesthetic. Her hind legs seemed to have no strength. What does this sound
like to you? A seizure? A nightmare? We're concerned and a little
unnerved. Today she seems more timid and unlike herself. Any advice would
be appreciated.

Answer
You are describing a seizure.  Some dogs have them occasionally.  If they come more than twice a month, she may need to be on medication.  You should have her checked out by your vet to see if there is a problem that is causing the seizures like an infection, low blood sugar, high blood calcium, liver disease or kidney disease.
