my dog developed bites all over his body and I am unsure what it is?  He receives the Advantage shot and is not due again for 3 months.  He is very uncomfortable and wanted to know if you were able to help so he can rest and so can we?. thank you.

Answer
Hi Helaine!

Other insects besides fleas can be biting your dog. At least where I live, Chiggers and Black Flies are out right now, and boy do they ever itch!

Try applying some pure Aloe Vera gel to your dog's itchy bites. (You can buy it at most drug stores, or natural food stores. Make sure you get 100% Aloe Vera). It's very soothing and cooling, and it won't hurt your dog if he licks it off. You can use it on yourself too!

There's a product called "Allercaine - Hot Spot Treatment" that is supposed to work well. Look for it at pet supply stores. It's an antiseptic, anti-itch remedy. It contains Lidocaine to deaden the pain and itching, with Allantoin to aid in promoting healthy skin. It has a very bitter flavor so your dog may not want to lick it off.

Inspect where your dog sleeps, since the bites are on his belly, it sounds as though he's being bitten when he's laying down.
If the itching continues see your vet. This might be a food or environmental allergy, or even mange.

I hope this has been helpful and I wish you the best of luck! Please keep me posted and give that doggy tons og get well kisses for me!Sending wagging tails your way!
