Question
My kitten Blackie is 10 months old.  About a month and a half ago he started throwing up and had severe diahrea. They checked him for feline leukemia and also for worms and found nothing so they thought it was maybe something he ate and it would clear up.  They did put him on an antibiotic but the name escapes me since he was running a slight temp.  Two weeks later I took him back.  The vomiting stopped, the fever was down but he still had loose stools.  So they put him on W/D Hills precription food.  He has been on that for about three weeks but his stools are still runny.  They start out formed and then the rest comes out runny.  I read that maybe one of the other formulations of Hills might help.  I called them back but they said just keep him on the food.  Is there anything else I can feed him temporarily that would help or should they be doing more tests on him to find out his real problem.  He is very playful and does drink alot of water but I worry about the feces being so runny.  I hate to keep calling the vet but he is like my child and I know what is happening is not normal.  Any suggestions.

Answer
Hi Karen!

First off, you may want to see a cats only vet. There is something wrong with your cat and they should be more supportive.

Did they check the kitten for coccidia? Or cryptosporidium/giardia?  Did they put this kitten on any anti-diarrheal medications such as flagyl to help ease the discomfort of inflammed intestines and act as an antibiotic at the same time?

Also being on a BLAND diet such as I/D or a hypoallergenic diet such as Z/D may help him better.

If he was my kitten, I would take him elsewhere for a second opinion. I would not take the 'keep him on the food' for an answer.

Hope this helps!
