Poop falls out of my pugs butt

Question
My female pug is twelve years old.  Recently poop just started to fall out of her butt.  Her diet has not changed and the poop is not watery, it is a perfect consistency, not to hard either.  She could be walking and it just comes out, she could be laying down sleeping or awake and I watch it just fall out.  I was going to try diapers but they all have holes cut out for the tail and that doesn't cover her anus.  She doesn't seem to be in pain, her spirits are as PUGGISH as always, her appetite is normal. That is the only strange thing that is happening. If we are walking, sometimes she leaves a trail of poop, I imagine so we can find our way home.  HElp

Answer
Hi Fran,
Your little dog is fecal incontinent. There are many reasons why this happen but it's possibly age-related.

The problem could be in her back as well. The spinal area right above her anus is full of nerves that control the sphincter muscles which in turn control her holding in her stool.
Basically she cannot feel anything there. So she doesn't know that she is losing stool.

It's hard to say what can cause this kind of nerve atrophy but you most definitely need to get her into your vet right away for an exam.

Her being fecally incontinent can cause other issues like bladder infections due to the way female dogs are built.

Please get her in to see your vet right away.
