Kitten Diarrhea

Question
we rescued a kitten this am . He/she must not have eaten for awhile~. It ate some puppy chow for at least 15 minutes! We can feel the spine all the way down to the tail. It looks between 8~12 weeks old,. we administered some pedialye thru a syringe two separate times . The poor thing can barely stand for a minute or 2.   The kitten has very bad diarrhea. ~the feces is running very rich~ as expected for a starving baby kitty, is there
anything we can give her to solidify its poops? And how do we sex a kitten?
we plan to keep this kitten well and hope it thrives. Thx in advance for your advice Doc.

Answer
First things first Jennifer. Get this little kitten to a vet and get it tested for FELV. FIP and FIV. Better to know now what you are facing then after you get her back to health only to find out she is harboring a life-threatening disease.

For now, get her on some boiled rice and Science Diet Kitten Growth. The rice will help with the diarrhea. Do NOT use Purina Kitten Chow as it is coated in milk and cats are lactose intolerant. It will only make her diarrhea much worse. Same for puppy food which isn't good for her anyway. Not enough nutrients in it for cats. Science Diet will help her growth into the most gorgeous cat you will ever see.

She is probably full of round worms, very common in all kittens and more so in abandoned ones. You can get that at the vets or get some once a month wormer at the store. It is the same drug. Treat according to the smallest weight on the package then in ten days give her a larger dose for her size.

As far as sexing her- females have an upside down exclamation point and males have a dot line dot. In other words, from the rectum down- you will see their anus, a small area that is the scrotum, then another dot, which is the opening to their penis.
The females have their anus and then a line, which is the urinary tract and vaginal opening.

Bless you for taking in this little doll, but please get her tested right away.
I have seen far more than I want to of kittens being nursed to health only to find out they are infected with leukemia and have infected the other cats in the household.

Please let me know how she tests out and how she is doing.
