Question
Ms. Fry-
My dad's 15 year old cat, Tommy, was having
seizure-like symptoms.  The veterinarian took
several tests, and all the preliminary tests
for liver, heart, lungs and blood, all came
back negative for any reason he'd be having
these seizures.  The doctor gave him 2.5cc of
prednisone(10mg), followed by 2.5cc of
theophylline(100mg).  Tommy was 15 yrs. old, and
weighed 8-9 lbs.  We know he was a little
depressed because my dad had just passed away, and
they were very close.  My question is: for Tommy's
age and weight, did the doctor give the right
medications and the correct dosages?

Answer
At this age, seizures are usually do to a brain tumor.

Valium and Phenobarbital are the two most common anti-seizure drugs.

Prednisone is a steroid that reduces inflammation and theophylline is a bronchodilator that is used to treat asthma.  I suppose your vet felt that his symptoms were related to an asthma attack?

So, to answer your question, NO these are not the right medications for seizures....the doses are acceptable.
