Question
Trying to understand the comparison between dry and canned (wet) feeding. If a given dog is to get say 5 cans/day of a particular dog food (based on the dogs weight and feeding chart on the can), and the 13 ounce canned food is 80% moisture (water), then that means the dog gets about 50 ounces of water from the five cans of food, right? If the same dog were instead fed
say 2 3/4 cups of average sized dry nuggets (just moistened a bit), does that mean he should be drinking about 50 ounces of water/day ?!

(The reason I ask is that we need to make sure
he is always well hydrated as a part of efforts to reduce chances of bladder stones recurring.
But we can't imagine him ever drinking 50 oz.
of water! Shall we make all his feedings soupy ?!
Also wondering if that much water could hurt him at his age (14).

We'll greatly appreciate any help to understand and any guidance.

Thank you.

Answer
By feeding canned food you are forcing fluids into him, and yes you can add even more water to the food.  And no it will not hurt him...water is good for him!

For a 50 pound dog, an average daily water (fluid) requirement would be about 1.3 LITERS.

I am not sure what type of bladder stones you are trying to avoid, but giving fresh veggies is always a good idea to help boost up the nutritional level of your dog.
