Question
Do i need to keep my new chihuahua puppy who just had his parvo (puppy shots) away from my pregnant Pomeranian female.  My sisters Bassett just had to be put down from contracting parvo from eating puppy poo from puppies that just had their shots.  Or was the Bassetts immune system probably compramized for it to effect her.

Answer
In all the literature I have ever read about parvo vaccination, not once have I read about a dog getting the virus from eating the stool of another dog. While some virus is shed from the vaccinations, it is not the type that causes the disease.

Your sisters dog had to be non-vaccinated or have a weakened immune system for her to be so bad that she was put down (sometimes the cost of treatment is an issue, not the severity of the disease). Most dogs survive parvo if they have had prior shots for it.

Hopefully your Pomeranian is also vaccinated for the disease. If she isn't she and the puppies both have a good chance of getting this deadly virus.

Parvo virus is a very hardy virus and you can bring it home to your dogs on your shoes or the tires of your car. It also has demonstrated itself to live on the ground or surfaces for up to 6 months. So as you can see, the Bassett could have gotten it from anywhere.

If your Pom is vaccinated then there is no reason for you to separate the two dogs.
