Cat and a new puppy ....

I have 2 cats (full grown about 8 years old). I'm thinking about adopting a puppy. I've been told by friends that it's a bad idea ... the cats won't be the same or become destructive. The cats are very cool, social, relaxed animals. WIll the addition of the puppy screw things up at home? The puppy won't get any bigger than 9lbs. Very small dog. The cats don't have any front claws.
