Nursing cat has fleas

Question
Three days ago my cat had kittens, she has a bad flea problem. I just bought Advantage for her, and I am wondering if it is safe to use on her now. Some say it is okay, but others say it isn't.
The last litter she had a few months ago all died at 5 weeks of age from anemia due to the fleas. I don't want that to happen again so I need to do something, but want to make sure it is safe for the kittens. Please help!
Thank you,
Kerri

Answer
Hi Kerri!  Advantage is definitely not safe.  I have seen many animals get severely and sometimes fatally ill from Advantage and other over the counter flea products.  The only safe anti-flea product is Frontline.  I would definitely take your cat and her kittens to your veterinarian ASAP.  Your veterinarian may do a flea dip that is safe for kittens.  Your cat definitely needs to be rid of the fleas, as does the kittens.  Some supplements may also be prescribed to prevent anemia issues.
Please let me know how they do!
