Question
MY SON HAS A SMALL DOG WHO ATE SOME ROSE PETALS ON VALENTINE DAY.  TUESDAY OF THIS WEEK SHE STARTED TO REFUSE SOME TREATS.  AND SHE DOESN'T SEEM TO BE AS HAPPY.  AND HER STOOLS HAD SOME ORANGE COLOR IN IT.  ARE ROSE PETALS POISION FOR DOGS???2-27-04

Answer
Lani,Rose petals in general are not deemed poisonous, as they are considered edible. Some gourmet chefs will elicit the use of them in various recipes.
However my concern lays in the fact that many of the flowers grown and sold on the market are treated with various chemicals and pesticides that could prove poisonous to a small dog in large quantities.
Nonetheless, most likely she would have come to display symptoms of a problem within a few hours of ingesting the petals, and not days or weeks later. Give that fact that she is displaying the symptoms you listed, I feel that she is suffering from a different condition.
Regardless, I suggest you have your son schedule and appointment with her regular veterinarian to have her seen and examined. As her diagnosis can vary from a whole list of possibilities, the only sure way to know; is by having the veterinarian look her over and administer any recommended testing.
Have your son take in a small sample of her stool to be tested when he takes her in, as this will help determine if she is suffering from a possible parasitic problem.
I wish I could offer more help, but without being able to see her, her regular veterinarian is the best person to turn to. Please do feel free to get back to me with any additional questions or concerns.
