Question
I've found out that our 7 yr old? has had these worms for over 6 mos. He was abandoned no tag no nothing.  He has arthritis. Rather than treating him w/ Immiticide w/ 1 1/2" needle, I'd like to find a milder, alternative treatment. He's a chow mix, 64.5#. CBC tests: not anemic, no excessive proteins. Xrays: enlarged heart & worms. If you have other ?? please write back. He's darling.  Thanks so much!

Answer
The needle is really no big deal to the dog. However it's the side effects of the treatment that are painful and irritating. I do believe that is the only way to treat it. And it must be treated. Heart worms are a nasty parasite. Your vet must monitor him closely after treatment. I found a site for you that I think might be useful and answer some of your questions. Do your own research on this site and then ask your vet any questions you might have after that. Make a treatment plan with him. Tell him your concerns. Maybe he can explain to you exactly what has to be done and what will happen if it is not done. I hope everything works out for you and your companion. Copy and paste this link into your browser.
