Question
our cat is about a year old and was spayed last fall. all has been well until now. she is howling and acting weird, crouching down with her tail up somewhat. is it possible for her to be in heat? how can we comfort her?

Answer
Patti,

There is a possibility that your cat may be in heat.  If the entire ovary is not removed then animals can still have estrus cycles.  These can be difficult and frustrating to determine if this is the case.  Personally, I dread having to find an ovarian remnant left behind.

I would suggest taking your cat back to the veterinarian who spayed her.  Your vet should be able to determine by history and physical exam if she is truly in heat or if there is another problem.  Then your vet should help you determine a course of therapy.

Good luck to you.
