Older cats losing weight

Question
I have two 14-year old cats who have been losing weight over the past few months.  They are current on all vaccines and live in the house only.  They are not exposed to outdoor animals.  They both are active and have normal appetites, but have lost weight.  Our vet cannot find anything wrong with them, but wormed them two months ago.  The male has lost 3 pounds and the female 2 pounds since Christmas. I am very concerned about them and wonder if this is part of the natural process of aging or whether there is something else wrong with them. Any suggestions?

Answer
Hey Renee,

Although Cats do commonly lose weight as they age, any dramatic weight loss should be brought to your vet's attention.

I work with over 15 Cats aday and I have worked with older Cats that have lost weight due to aging, but it's usually about 2 pounds and that's it.

If your Cat starts losing weight again and it gets very serious..... I would advise you to take him/her back to the veterinarian.

Hope this helps,
