Question
My 13 yr old lab has been under a vet care for over 2 years for ear fungus/yeast infection in right ear only. We have her on Cipro, Baytril, and Otomax. We also clean the ear with a keto- flush, as well as giving her Benedryl BID. With this said,  yesterday,  she developed a tumor type object beside the infected ear and her eye area. she cant eat and wont drink, has bad head tilt and the ear began to drip out "rust" colored blood. Took her to emergency vet they say nothing can be done except 2000 surgery to remove the canals in the ear, or try different antibiotics, and place her on steroids for inflammation. This is where we are at now,  Please advise on what if anything else can be done

Answer
My guess is that there is a ruptured eardrum with a serious middle ear infection.  That's why they said to have surgery to remove the ear canal and the lining of the middle ear (TECA-LBO Total Ear Canal Ablation - Lateral Bulla Osteotomy).

If there is just a fungal infection in the ear, then I cannot understand the Cipro or Baytril...they do not kill yeasts at all.  Topical ketoconazole, miconazole, or clotrimazole are the drugs of choice.

If there is an allergy that is causing this infection, which is usually the case with a yeast infection, then steroids may really give the dog some relief.  I also recommend a product called Malacetic Ultra Otic made by Dechra that is safe to use for a yeast infection even if the eardrum is ruptured.
