QuestionWe have owned several cats over the years, but we now have adopted a male cat that is about 6 months old and his urine has an unusually strong ammonia smell. We recently had him fixed and thought that might help but it did not. He eats and drinks and behaves normal. He urinates in the box. It just smells strong and is overpowering. Could there be a serious health issue we should have a vet take a look at or are we just going to have to deal with the smell in other ways? Are there any natural supplements we can add to his food to help neutralize the smell?
AnswerI think what you are dealing with here is the smell of 'tomcat' urine that should diminish with time. You said you recently had him fixed and it can take a few weeks for the hormones to go away for good and the smell to lessen.
Some cats are real tom-catty as young as 5 months but most are not so bad until they hit 6-8 months.
I doubt that this will be a permanent issue. Give it some time. Supplements won't work in this case and most of those only over load the cat's kidneys etc.
Get him on a good diet like Science Diet and that will help his overall health and thus could hasten the demise of the smell.
If you are still noticing this smell in another month I would contact the vet but I doubt if you will.
Let me know in a few weeks if the smell has started to fade away or not.
Make sure you keep really fresh litter in the box too, because of course wet litter will smell worse.
