Chihuahua too old to breed?

18 15:01:39

Question
My Chi had a litter of SIX healthy pups two years ago.  She is now 10, and the only pup we kept was stolen.  My husband wants have another litter so we can have one of her pups, but I am afraid it would be too dangerous for her to have pups at her age. She is in season right now.  I don't want to risk her because she is so smart and sweet, but for the same reasons I would love to have one or two of her puppies.  Is she too old to breed?

Answer
Carol,

My recommendation is to stop breeding between 5 and 8 years.  And, really, that is the dogs who have been breeding consistently.  I think your dog would be at a very hish risk to breed her at this age.  Not only that, but I recommend spaying over 7 years due to the risk of an infected uterus which can be life threatening.

Good Luck to you both.
