Kittens still nursing

Question
I have a female cat that had kittens 14 weeks ago.  The kittens are eating hard food most of the time but sometimes they will nurse.  Is this normal and how can I get them to stop?

Answer
Hi Elizabeth!  A kitten should be weaned by 5-6 weeks of age.  They definitely shouldn't be feeding off of the mother cat at this point in time, although this behavior can be normal, because the mother cat will continue to produce milk as long as they feed off of her.  I would definitely suggest going to the pet store and buying a "belly band" fit for a small dog..(chihuahua, ect.) that would fit the mother cat.  This will deter the kittens from being able to feed off of the mother cat.
I hope this helps!
