Question
I recently adopted 2 adult male cats (brothers) from the SPCA.  They are b/t 2 & 3 years old.  They have great personalities and have adjusted well.  Floyd, seems to leak anal fluid about every week and a half.  I find trippings leading from the litter box through the house.  It typically ends with him deficating a large portion outside of the litter pan, in another room.  I have also noticed him squeezing his stomach like he has gas pains.  This seems to happen every week & a half.  I have him on Diet NutraMax food.  What could cause this?

Answer
Cindy, Cats rarely have anal gland problems, so it sounds like he may be having occasional but repetative loose stools, including some abdominal cramps.  If this is the case, he may have some inflammatory bowel problems.  I would have a Vet check him out.  In the meantime, you may try giving him some Immodium once or twice per day when he does this and see if he gets some relief.  The doctor may prescribe prednisone in a graduated down dosage.  The best case scenario is that he may just be sensitive to the NutraMax.  It is a good food, so I would have him checked out before changing it.
