Question
Hello Dr. Gotthelf

Last summer, my cat began biting the fur off her belly and constanty licking the area to the point that her skin is red, raw, and abraded.

Chrissy is approx. 6 years old, and she is spayed.

In the past year, I have taken her to the
veterinarian twice for this condition. Both times he gave her a steroid injection, gave me ointment for her belly, and put an e-collar on her.

I launder her bedding and change it every 3 days. I give her a fresh, disposable litter pan daily.

I don't know what else I can do for her. Should I take her to the veterinarian for another injection?

Thank you for any information you can provide.

Answer
This is most likely an allergic reaction to something.  When cats get allergies, they "barber" the hair off of their belly.  The cortisone shot is probably a long acting steroid that takes away the itching from the allergy.  If the cat needs another shot, go get him one.  Fortunately, cats rarely have side effects from cortisone. Some cats with skin allergies can benefit from an antihistamine called chlorpheniramine.  Ask your vet for some for you to try with your cat.
