QuestionWe have a cat, seemingly healthy, who likes to lick a red (Santa Clara Indian) clay pot. Is this dangerous to her? Is it the sign of a mineral or vitamin deficiency? Thank you for your answer.
AnswerI would remove the pot so she can not lick it or coat it with Bitter Apple.
I have heard reports of some ceramic/stone-ware products containing lead, which is dangerous to her if she licks it--so just be aware and cautious.
Some cats will lick weird things because they are obsessive compulsive or curious, while there is always a chance of anemia or deficiency that is leading to the problem.
If the behavior continues, then I would have a stool sample checked and some blood work to be on the safe side to make sure there aren't any underlying problems.
