Hamster ilness

Question
I just noticed out of the blue , my teddy bear hamster  has a black and blue  area around his penis. His penis is also red and looks as though it is oozing some pus. I am concerned that it is an infection.  What may this have come from? There is another hamster in the cage that appears to be healthy.

Yes, it sounds like it could be an infection. I don't think it's an internal (bladder/kidney) infection though. Instead, it was probably caused by an injury (bite, scratch, etc), maybe from the other hamster in the cage. Either way, you should take your hamster to the vet. He or she will be able to tell you what's wrong with your hamster, and, if it is an infection, prescribe antibiotics to help. In the meantime, make sure he's eating and especially drinking water. You can give him apple or cucumber slices to help keep him hydrated. Also, if possible, separate the two hamsters temporarily so that your other hamster stays healthy.
