demodectic mange/sarcoptic mange

Question
I am treating a group of pups for demodectic mange.  We are using
Ivermectin as our treatment.  The dosing is based on 1cc oer 50 pounds.   So
12.5 pounds would require a dose of .25 or 1/4 of a cc.   I want to double
check on how long I dose.  I was told everyday for two weeks.  Is that correct.
One vet did recommend every other day.

Just wanted to double check on the two weeks length of time.

Also curious why one vet might suggest giving it every day and another vet
suggests every other day.   Any thoughts on that.

Thanks Terri

Answer
Sincere apologies for the delayed response.

Dosing of Ivermectin has been evolving over time, as the original dosing in large animals (horses, cattle) was many less doses at a longer interval.  It was determined however that much more frequent and total number of applications is necessary in dogs.  The adapting has led to many different protocols based on what worked for particular veterinarians.

I would recommend going with the daily dosing for at least the two weeks.  Depending on how long the puppies will be in your care I would actually suggest if possible to continue for a month.  It can take a significant time to fully eradicate the mange.  Please note that Ivermectin is not considered safe in collies, sheepdogs, Australian shepherds and should be used very cautiously in any herding breeds.

I hope this helps.  Best of luck to you and the pups.
